I finally caught a fish. It was a whiting, pretty small, but good eating, so I’m told. I threw him back, but it was exciting to catch and I’m hoping it’s a good omen.
Earlier in the day I drove to a “tree boneyard” on the southern end of Hunting Island. Hurricane Matthew struck the area in 2016 and decimated a huge section of trees, taking back something like 8 feet of sand from the island. Now, many of the dead trees are still standing, their roots exposed and their trunks levitating above what was once the ground. Like Tom Waits said, “There’s a world going on underground.” Huge chunks of buildings, bricks and stone, still lay on the beach. The power of wind and waves.
