After a half day of work, I left Hunting Island in the rearview this afternoon. I made a pit stop at a Camping World 60 miles later where I was able to buy a converter, which I hope will fix the issue I’m having with the electrical. I crossed through Georgia, then into Florida, where I continued on to Osceola National Forest, about 70 miles west of Jacksonville.
Unfortunately, not only did it look cooler in the pictures, but Starlink is having issues picking up a steady internet connection, so I think tomorrow morning I’ll hit the road again and keep moving west along the Florida panhandle, likely destination: Conecuh National Forest.
After finding a spot at Osceola and beginning to set up the camper, a guy came by and said, “So, I went and put a tag on this spot and a chair and then went and paid for it.” I looked around. I didn’t see a chair or a tag. But I didn’t realize he was speaking in a sort of future tense, as perhaps is the custom here, because he then pulled a chair out of his truck and set it up, and put up a tag as well.
Generally, when you’re camping at a first-come, first-served campground, you leave something in the spot so this kind of thing doesn’t happen, but I happily moved because I hadn’t set much up and there were plenty of spots available nearby. But it was interesting to speak of things that will happen in the future as though they are things which have already happened. It’s possible he was a theoretical physicist, maybe a time-traveler even, but it was getting dark and I didn’t have time to quiz him so I picked up and moved a few spots down.
Apparently a few miles from here, the largest Civil War battle in Florida, the Battle of Olustee, took place in 1864. When I think of the Civil War I definitely don’t think of Florida. To be clear, I’m referring to the Civil War that happened in the past. The one that happens in the future, I definitely think of Florida. Sadly, I’m not sure I’ll have time to see this past-is-prelude tomorrow because I want to be on the road early. Tomorrow I gain an hour, back in CST.
