March 22 – Air raisins

Last night in my room at Joel’s house there was a fly buzzing around. I think it was about 5 a.m. and I wondered why it was up so early and what was so damn important. Don’t flies sleep? He buzzed around in the dark for a good hour but I didn’t do anything about it.

Joel calls flies “air raisins,” because his dog Jack loved to bite them out of the air and eat them. Jack died last year, but I don’t think the air raisins had anything to do with it.

Growing up, if a fly landed on your food and my dad saw it, he would say, “No charge for the extra meat.” He still says it.

Today I worked all day. Then I cleaned off Joel’s patio for some kind of work that involved actual movement. Joel and I are going to play trivia tonight at a bar. We’ve been having too much beer, but it’s Joel’s fault, not mine.

Hi. I’m Adam Overland, a writer based in Minneapolis. These are the meanderings of my muddled mind. I’ve written humor columns for various print publications, so naturally that’s dead and here I am, waiting for the last gasp.
